Data Backup Compliance
Even if your business does not deal with compliance due to a certain law or government agency it is a good idea to choose a data backup provider that is compliant with certain data protection regulations. Your clients will appreciate that their data is being kept secure and private even if your particular business is not regulated.
Make sure to ask each online backup provider how they are compliant with certain regulations from the SEC, NASD, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and the Gramm-Leach-Billey Act.
Most of the rules around data backup compliance are around the ability for a company to be able to keep a backup of their data in a secure location as well as be able to produce their data in the event of an audit.
Some regulations such as the SEC rule 17a-4 even require that data be backed up by a third-party. Failure to comply with the data backup regulations will result in heavy financial penalties and/or imprisonment.
As of late, most online backup providers are compliant with most of these laws and regulations. However, some online backup providers focus more on compliance than others. For example, there are those online backup providers which services allow you to do file sharing as well as data backup, while others simply allow you to backup your data. The inability to share your files and restore them to any location adds an additional level of security and ensures that your data is securely backed up.
