Small Businesses Pick the Best Products of the Year for Data Backup

February 5, 2007 -- EVault SBE was announced the winner of Small Business Computing's Best Products of the Year 2007 award in the "Network Data Back-Up & Recovery" category.

It's not surprising to see managed backup and recovery services gaining popularity with small businesses given how many of them lack in-house IT resources. In this category we had five finalists, and the winner, EVault Small Business Edition, offers small businesses with 15GB or less server data a complete off-site backup and recovery service. EVault offers compliance with several industry standards, including SEC, HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley, and it provides your business with a Web-based management console allowing you to access your data whenever and wherever you need it. Best of all, as a managed service, it's a worry-free, low-maintenance options for small businesses.

Bank tape lost with data on 90,000 customers

January 11, 2006 -- A computer tape from a Connecticut bank containing personal data on 90,000 customers was lost in transit recently, the bank reported today.

People's Bank, based in Bridgeport, Conn., is sending letters to the affected customers, it said in a statement. The tape contains information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers and checking account numbers. It was bound for the TransUnion LLC credit reporting bureau, based in Woodlyn, Pa., via United Parcel Service of America Inc., the bank said.

UPS is investigating the incident along with all involved parties, said UPS spokeswoman Heather Robinson. She would not disclose when the package was lost.

The bank has not received any reports of unauthorized activity on the affected accounts and has no reason to believe the data has been improperly used, according to People's statement. The bank considers misuse of the data "highly unlikely." UPS also has no evidence that the package was compromised, stolen or received by an unauthorized person, according to Robinson.

Loss and theft of personal data has taken on a high profile since the theft of data on 145,000 consumers from credit and personal information vendor ChoicePoint Inc. in February 2005. Since that time, there have been dozens of reported cases of loss or theft of personal information involving more than 52 million people, according to a chronology compiled by the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse in San Diego. Among them was the loss of a computer backup tape from Bank of America Corp. containing information on 1.2 million customers, according to the privacy rights group.

Marriott timeshare unit reports lost tapes

December 29, 2005 -- Marriott Vacation Club International (MVCI), the vacation ownership division and subsidiary of Marriott International Inc., had a nasty Christmas Eve surprise for 206,000 of its customers: a report that backup tapes had been lost containing sensitive personal data, including Social Security numbers, and bank and credit card numbers.

MVCI released a press release Dec. 27 reporting that the tapes had "disappeared" from the corporate office in Orlando Fla., -- in mid-November, according to some reports. The company said that the letter to affected customers and associates had only gone out Dec. 24 because they were first trying to find the tapes, and then conducting an investigation to figure out what data was on the lost cartridges.

Ameritrade warns 200,000 clients of lost data

April 19, 2005 -- Ameritrade Inc. has advised 200,000 current and former customers that a computer backup tape containing their personal information has been lost, MSNBC.com has learned. The tape contained information spanning the years 2000-2003, and included both current and past consumers of the online broker, according to spokeswoman Donna Kush.

Notices were mailed to the affected consumers last week, according to the company. "We believe that information about your closed account resided on the missing tape," read one typical message, sent to a former Ameritrade customer. "The information could include your account number, name and/or other personal information, like your Social Security number."
